近来以军持续对加沙地带南部城市拉法发动军事行动，大量加沙民众被迫再度踏上逃亡之路，前往加沙地带西南部所谓的“人道主义区”——马瓦西。5月19日，不少流离失所者滞留在马瓦西北部。他们表示，当地几乎没有饮用水，也没有公共卫生设施。马瓦西位于汗尤尼斯西部海岸，大约有12公里长，1公里宽，面积相当于整个加沙地带的4%。此前这里只是一片沿海的荒漠，有大约9000名居民，而如今在这里已经容纳了数十万名流量失所的民众。
