A group of bitcoiners is working on developing a new bitcoin (BTC) circular economy in the Yucatan Peninsula, southeast of Mexico. There they are taking the first steps towards the creation of Citadel Inah.
Rein van den Berg is the name of the project leader, a Dutchman living in Mexico who, together with a group of bitcoiner friends, acquired land in Mérida, the capital of the state of Yucatán.
According to Rein's statements, the goal is to create a self-sufficient and sovereign community, in line with the values of Bitcoin.
They decided to use the Mayan roots that characterize the Yucatecan region to name the project. Inah is a variant of the word corn in the Mayan language, which has three translations: nal (cob), ixi'im (grain) and inah (seed).
Saving the best seeds (inahs) for the future is the symbolic meaning for this long-term project, says Rein, explaining that for the Mayans Inah is the best corn chosen and reserved for future seeds.
Hence, the plan with Citadel Inah not only focuses on using bitcoin as an alternative to fiat money, but also on the production of food for domestic consumption. This, based on principles such as agroforestry (cultivation of trees, pastures and livestock raising) and regenerative land agriculture. They are agricultural and grazing practices that seek to reverse climate change by regenerating soil organic matter and restoring biodiversity.
The community participants will have their home there, their own space for their particular performance. There are also plans to expand trade and rent properties for visitors. And although the focus of the citadel is private (participation is by invitation), they summon bitcoiner organizations for their integration.
