In June, Paradigm's official website published an article titled "Intent-Based Architectures and Their Risks," which first brought the concept of Intent( to the public. Related protocols and infrastructure have developed rapidly, becoming a hot topic of discussion in the crypto world at the ETHCC conference in July.

Intent is not a new concept. The crypto space has been working hard to abstract and automate operations, from aggregators, centralized exchanges, and smart contract wallets to cross-chain DeFi. There are also Chainlink, automation middleware, and the recent Telegram bot, among others.

The intention is to bring new changes. In the past, the focus was on product interaction, while in the AGI era, the focus is on human-computer interaction. AI/LLM) large language models( contain immense potential to enhance interactions in the encryption field.

01, Top-Down Anoma and Bottom-Up Unibot

In the past half year, agreements, projects, and infrastructures related to intentions have been booming one after another. Here, we take two typical examples to gain insight into the situation.

In the context of severe homogenization in Layer 1, the Anoma Foundation has raised a total of $57.8 million in three rounds of funding, supported by the intent-centric ) architecture, the intent-centric ( framework of Anoma ) Dapp full-stack architecture (, and the Namada ) privacy Layer 1(, ranking 7th in terms of funding amount among Layer 1/Layer 2 projects without token issuance.

Recalling Anoma's presentation at EthCC, founder Adrian Brink stated that Anoma's uniqueness lies in: all interactions begin with intent, the user's expressed intent is processed by Anoma's black box architecture ) also known as the magic box (, realizing the core transaction process based on intent interactions:

  • User Interaction: Users can send transparent, private, or protected intentions to the Anoma black box architecture.
  • Intent collection and matching: The parser of the black box architecture collects intents, performs balanced state transitions, and achieves counterparty matching.
  • Transaction Processing: The matched transaction is submitted to the crypto memory pool, and the validator sends the block packaged by the proposer to the execution layer, completing execution and verifying validity, and finally updating the state root.

The Anoma team has identified the pain points at the underlying layer of blockchain protocols. They reviewed the evolution from Bitcoin's scriptable settlement to Ethereum's programmable settlement, pointing out that the limitations of existing application protocol architectures necessitate at least one Web2 component, making counterparty discovery and resolution impossible. They believe that the intent-centric Anoma architecture represents the third generation of Dapp architecture for blockchain protocols, allowing users to define the desired outcome state, achieving efficient and customizable privacy transactions at the intent level, ushering in a new era.

Although Anoma has gained favor and investment from many institutions, it has only established a solid technical foundation so far, and exciting practical applications have yet to be seen. On the other hand, TG Bot has opened up the imaginative space for the practical implementation of the Intent segmentation scenario with its on-chain automated trading tools.

Unibot is a Telegram-based trading bot )TG Bot( that allows users to perform automated DEX trading through Telegram, offering features such as sniper buying, copy trading, DEX limit orders, privacy, and anti-MEV. Unibot replaces the complex interactions of Uniswap with Intent, providing a convenient DeFi experience. Unibot has also spawned a number of TG Bot clones, and the total market capitalization of the TG Bot sector is currently close to 200 million USD.

Top-down Anoma is innovation, while bottom-up TG Bot is transformation. Anoma starts from an intent-based underlying architecture, but the team's progress is slow; although TG Bot brings users a brand new on-chain interactive interface, it is not intelligent and has many security risks.

The two paths lead to the same goal - simplifying the user interaction experience, introducing a new programmable and customizable user interaction interface - User Intent Layer ), allowing users to bypass complex on-chain interactions and define transaction status based on intent.

02. AI as the New User Interface: Command Interaction vs Intent Interaction

The AI paradigm is introducing the third user interface paradigm in the history of computers, shifting to a completely new interaction mechanism - users tell the computer what they want, rather than how to do it.

  • Paradigm One: Batch Processing
  • Paradigm Two: Command-based Interaction Design
  • Paradigm Three: Intent-Based Result Specification

Every revolution in interaction modes throughout history has led to entirely new business models. LLM-based generative AI brings disruptive changes to human-computer interaction, directly transforming traditional software UI interactions into interactions with a Chatgpt chat window, which is an unprecedented experience. LLM + crypto introduces a new proposition for the crypto world based on intent interactions, where LLM has the potential to make blockchain interactions smarter by discovering and describing user intentions.

03. The Evolution of the Concept of Intent, Interaction Paradigms, Current Status, and Trends

Intent is not a new concept; it has existed since the Web 2.0 era. With the rise of search engines, users can input their intent to obtain relevant results. After the emergence of e-commerce platforms, users can express their purchasing intent, while the platform is responsible for logistics. In 2017, Gartner introduced the concept of Intent-based Networking (, providing users with an interface that only requires them to express their needs, while the platform handles the business details.

Intent-based networking is the development trend of network automation and intelligence in the Web2 era. Andrew Lerner, Vice President of Research at Gartner, pointed out in 2017 that this will be the next milestone in the field of networking.

During the evolution from Web2 to Web3, the concept of intent in Web3 is not clear, but there are some common understandings:

  • Paradigm Definition: Intent is a set of declarative constraints that allows users to delegate the creation of transactions to specialized third-party networks while retaining full control over the process.
  • Anoma Definition: Intent is a message sent by the user that expresses custom preferences, defining the constraints of what the system can execute, rather than the specific execution path.
  • Propellerheads definition: An intention is a part of a transaction that requires assistance from others, simplifying complex transactions by outsourcing the difficult parts to third parties.

In practical applications of Web3 based on intent transactions, users create intents off-chain, outsource them to parsers, encapsulating the complexity of blockchain interactions while retaining complete on-chain control over the process for users, thereby lowering the threshold for on-chain interactions.

The intent also brings the concept of LLM architecture - intent centric ), focusing on user intent ( architecture. Currently, relevant crypto protocols and infrastructure embed the interaction layer between users and Crypto, leveraging LLM to provide a better on-chain interaction experience.

LLM+Crypto brings a new paradigm of human-computer interaction, allowing users' intentions to be directly translated into smart contract calls. Users simply need to express their intentions like using Siri, and bots/AI agents/third-party parsers help complete complex on-chain operations. In the future, intent-based Web3 interactions will become more intelligent, with the potential to significantly reduce the complexity of user interactions on the chain.

More and more Web3 projects are exploring the magic of intent. Whether it's intent-based Dapps or underlying architecture, they are releasing the potential of intent from different perspectives. We attempt to organize this rapidly evolving field by categorizing it into four major types from an interaction perspective, and tracking the latest developments and trends:

  1. Infrastructure ) intent-centric architectural layer (:

    • DappOS
    • Flash 2.0 SUAVE
    • Anoma
    • Cow Protocol
  2. Supporting facilities ) related to intent and account abstract wallet infrastructure (:

    • ERC 4337
    • Account abstraction related: packager infrastructure, wallet SDK
    • Intent-related: Juvix, Seaport, Gelato, etc.
  3. Enterprise applications ) integrate Dapp's intention infrastructure, API, modular intention layer, specific domain parsers (:

    • Trading Parser API: PropelleHeads
    • Intent API:EnsoFinance
    • Intent Trading Infrastructure: Bob the Solver, Brink
    • Composable Intent Tool: Essential
  4. Consumer applications ) user interaction smart interfaces such as wallets, DEX, Web3 AI Agents, smart search engines (:

    • Wallets: Safe, Bitconomy, Argent, etc.
    • DEX: CowSwap, Paraswap, Uniswap, etc.
    • Intelligent Frontend: Unibot, Dora, Web3 Analytics, etc.

![Behind the explosive popularity of the TG Bot: the intention trading is knocking on the door of intelligent Web3 interactions])https://img-cdn.gateio.im/webp-social/moments-84ecb77bf7d2a7c2a0173494b7212393.webp(

Infrastructure, supporting facilities, and enterprise applications attempt to solve the underlying challenges based on intent, but infrastructure cannot be achieved overnight. The trends at the consumer application layer are truly exciting, as the evolution of interaction entry points like wallets and DEX showcases the potential for intelligent interaction.

Wallet Intelligence: ERC-4337 introduces a new user intent layer )UserOps(, where users express their intent, and the packager converts that intent into executable signed transactions. Recently, the number of ERC4337 users has significantly increased, with ZeroDev, Biconomy, and Safe modular smart accounts being the most motivated to promote AA+intent, which has the potential to give rise to the arrival of smart contract wallets )SCW( in the future.

The transition of DEX architecture: Intent Based Trading ) Intent Based Trading ( aims to enhance capital efficiency and user experience. CoW Hooks link complex operations such as trading, bridging, staking, and depositing, while UniswapX allows users to sign intent for off-chain matching and on-chain settlement. Similar intent-based DEXs like BananaHq, Brink, and basedmarkets are gradually increasing, and a new intent-based RFQ narrative ) SYMMIO ( is unfolding. As more DEXs and aggregators transition to an intent-based architecture, the DEX landscape is undergoing significant changes.

Smart Interaction Entrance: Similar to how TG Bot transforms the Web3 front-end interaction interface, the interaction entrance focuses on understanding user intentions and systematically converting them into automated, actionable tasks. Not only are TG Bot-like trading robots involved, but Web3 AI Agents and Web3 intelligent search engines are also making Web3 interactions smarter.

04, Challenges and Prospects of Intelligent Interaction in Web3

The interaction experience of Web3 products in the past hindered widespread adoption, and the wealth creation effect on-chain has masked many product issues. Now, liquidity and user attention are dispersed, and on-chain liquidity is scarce.

At the July ETHCC conference, developers widely discussed the intent-centric future and how to help users interact with DApps more intelligently in Web3. However, the implementation of intent-centric applications still faces many challenges:

  • Lack of intent-related programming languages ) such as Juvix (
  • Lack of suitable intent architecture ) such as Anoma (
  • Lack of specific domain parsers ) such as Bob The Solver (
  • The intention is to achieve centralization and closure ) like CowSwap (
  • Lack of front-end intention recognition parser ) like Unibot (
  • Lack of composable intent implementation ) like Brink (
  • Intent security risk ) Paradigm article mentions (
