Elon Musk claimed on Twitter X that he had proposed to evacuate two American astronauts early on 2/21, but was directly rejected by NASA and Joe Biden's government because he supported Donald Trump, and the White House did not want Trump supporters to receive praise.

But former NASA deputy administrator Pam Melroy directly refuted Musk's claim, emphasizing that NASA has never received such a proposal and has not been influenced by any political pressure in its decision-making, emphasizing that all arrangements are made in the "safest manner".

Astronaut stranded for 9 months, NASA says arranging safest way to evacuate

According to Bloomberg, the main characters of the incident are American astronauts Barry Wilmore and Sunita Williams, who were originally scheduled to take a week-long test mission to the International Space Station (ISS) aboard the Starliner capsule developed by the (Boeing) company, to verify the suitability of the spacecraft for transporting personnel between Earth and the space station.

However, after Starliner arrived at the space station, a series of technical issues occurred. NASA decided to have the capsule return to Earth, while Wilmore and Williams stayed on the ISS, waiting to return home on SpaceX's Crew-9 mission.

According to NASA's plan, these two astronauts will return to Earth on SpaceX Crew-9 in March 2025, ending a 9-month unexpected space journey.

Musk revealed that NASA refused to let me save people in advance

However, Musk tweeted on 2/21, accusing NASA of being able to send Crew-9 back through SpaceX months ago, but NASA and the White House refused his proposal, citing a reluctance to give media praise to Trump supporters.

Musk criticized the Biden administration and NASA for inefficiency on Twitter.

Musk even insulted a Danish astronaut in the post, because the latter said in an interview that Musk's remarks were "lies". This remark caused a great uproar, and many began to question whether NASA's decisions were really influenced by political factors.

Former NASA Deputy Administrator refuted that he had never heard of this, and the White House did not interfere with NASA.

Regarding Musk's disclosure, former NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy directly refuted, emphasizing that NASA has never received a proposal from SpaceX to evacuate astronauts early.

Melroy said: 'If Musk did talk to someone about this, it definitely wasn't anyone at our NASA headquarters. The proposal didn't come to us, and no one told us about it.' She also pointed out that the Biden administration did not interfere with NASA's decision: 'The White House has always allowed NASA to make its own decisions on safety-related issues, without any intervention.'

In other words, NASA has always prioritized 'safety' over political factors.

NASA said it's too dangerous to change the schedule arbitrarily and leave a astronaut behind.

NASA said that Musk's statement does not conform to their operational logic, as if Crew-9 were to return early, there would be only one American astronaut left alone on the International Space Station for several months, which is a rather undesirable situation.

Melroy explained: 'If there is only one American astronaut on the space station, in case of equipment failure or emergency, there is no one available to assist, which is quite detrimental to mission safety.'

NASA's usual practice is handover, which means allowing the next batch of astronauts to arrive before letting the previous batch return, ensuring the smooth operation of the space station. Therefore, letting Wilmore and Williams return as scheduled on Crew-9 is the safest choice.

NASA emphasizes that it has not received Musk's proposal and has no advance evacuation plan

Regarding this dispute, internal sources at NASA revealed that in the past few days, various departments of NASA have received instructions from superiors not to respond temporarily to the internal emails sent by the Musk team, which asked NASA employees 'what work have you completed in the past week'.

Finally, NASA spokesperson stated that NASA will respond to SpaceX's questions in a unified manner by the leadership, not by individual employees. Currently, SpaceX and the White House have not issued formal responses to this incident, but NASA has stated, 'There is no advance evacuation plan, nor have we heard of Musk proposing this plan.'
