Musk's dialogue with the far-right leader in Germany about X raises concerns about election interference.
On January 10, according to foreign media reports, Musk had a conversation with Alice Weidel, the leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, on his social media platform X, urging Germans to vote for the party in the upcoming elections. This highlights the increasing ambition of the American billionaire to disrupt European politics. In a wide-ranging and sometimes rigid dialogue, Musk and Weidel discussed topics such as immigration, the German bureaucratic system, energy policy, space colonization, God, and Hitler, agreeing that the AfD is the answer to Germany's predicament. Despite being the second largest party in terms of polling support, the AfD has little chance of forming a government due to other parties refusing to cooperate. Nonetheless, critics worry that Musk's support for the AfD could further increase its popularity, weaken support for mainstream parties, and make it more difficult for them to form a cohesive alliance.
