All in on BTC! Metaplanet's goal this year is to increase its holdings to 10,000 coins.
With market expectations that the US government may adopt Bitcoin as a reserve asset, thereby driving an institutional investment frenzy, Metaplanet, a Japanese publicly listed company known as the 'MicroStrategy of Japan,' is also targeting this trend, announcing plans to increase its BTC holdings to 10,000 coins within the year, an increase of 470% from the current level.
Metaplanet has been implementing the "BTC strategy" since April last year, and CEO Simon Gerovich stated that the company will "fully utilize the most value-creating capital tools in the market" to significantly increase the BTC position. He wrote in the post:
Last year was a critical turning point for us, not only did we break multiple records, but we also successfully expanded the Bitcoin reserves, consolidating Metaplanet's position as a leading BTC asset management company in Asia. This year, we will spare no effort to create greater value for shareholders.
As of December 23, Metaplanet holds a total of 1,761.98 BTC, worth approximately 27.2 billion yen (about 173.6 million US dollars). Throughout last year, Metaplanet completed a total of 19 BTC purchases, with an average purchase price of 11,846,002 yen (about 75,000 US dollars).
Meanwhile, the 'BTC Yield' of Metaplanet (the ratio of BTC holdings to issued shares) has jumped significantly in the fourth quarter of 2024, soaring from 42% to 310%, indicating that the company's accumulation of BTC far exceeds the issuance of new shares.
In order to further enhance purchasing power, Metaplanet conducted a series of capital market operations, including in 2024:
June 28th: Stocks undergo a 10-to-1 consolidation, raising the trading price per share to over 50,000 Japanese yen, in compliance with the minimum trading unit requirement of the Tokyo Stock Exchange;
August 6: The rights issue plan was launched, increasing the number of shares from 18.17 million to 36.27 million, and successfully raising 10 billion yen (approximately 6.37 billion U.S. dollars) from 13,774 shareholders;
November: Establishing a new stock option plan to pave the way for future funding needs;
December: Raised 9.5 billion yen (approximately 603 million US dollars) through two bond issues.
