Russia Wants Tangible Results from the Alaska Summit Between Putin and Trump
On a military base near Anchorage, Alaska, Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump are meeting today for the first time in six years. The Kremlin has made it clear that it is not looking for a mere symbolic handshake — it wants concrete agreements, particularly on Ukraine, NATO, sanctions, and economic relations. Before arriving, Trump warned that no trade deals between the U.S. and Russia would be signed until there is progress toward ending the war in Ukraine. “Putin wants economic talks, but we won’t trade until the situation calms down,” he told reporters aboard Air Force One. He added that he is willing to discuss territorial issues, but only if Ukraine has the final say. Today’s program includes an initial private meeting at 11:00 a.m. local time, followed by a broader session with five representatives on each side. The summit will conclude with a joint press conference before Trump departs back to Washington at 5:45 p.m.
Trump Rejects Economic Talks Without Concrete Steps from Russia The White House insists that economic topics will only be discussed if Putin demonstrates a real willingness to change course. While Moscow has brought a delegation of business leaders to the summit, Trump stressed that this alone means little. “I noticed he brought a lot of businessmen, which is good, but we’re not going to talk trade until the war ends,” he said. Trump also issued a warning: if the conflict continues, Russia will face further economic consequences. Among the measures on the table are new tariffs targeting key buyers of Russian oil, such as China and India. Russia’s wartime economy is already under strain, and further U.S. actions could make the impact even harsher. Putin, ahead of the summit, called Trump’s approach “energetic and sincere.” But Trump made it clear that “playing games” would yield no benefits. Without real movement toward a resolution, there will be no talks about relief, agreements, or easing sanctions.
Putin’s Offer: Freeze the Conflict in Exchange for NATO Concessions According to Kremlin insiders, Putin may propose halting the fighting along the current front line if the West guarantees that NATO will stop expanding and lift certain sanctions. Moscow also demands a legally binding pledge that NATO will not spread further east. However, NATO has already stated that Ukraine’s future lies within the alliance. Moscow has also put forward another proposal: with the last remaining nuclear weapons treaty set to expire in February, Putin is open to negotiating a new strategic arms agreement. This could be tempting for Trump, but in Moscow’s view, it’s more of a bargaining chip than an act of goodwill.
Kyiv Sees No Breakthrough Ahead President Volodymyr Zelenskyy considers Putin’s offers as a tactic to “buy time” and avoid further U.S. secondary sanctions. He has ruled out any deal that involves giving up territory and instead seeks U.S.-backed security guarantees — though it’s still unclear what such commitments would mean in practice. Public sentiment in Kyiv remains skeptical. Many believe Putin is simply trying to ease pressure from Washington and that the summit will not bring a significant breakthrough. Without changes on the battlefield or substantial progress in diplomacy, Ukraine does not expect major results from the meeting.
