Metis Hyperion: A Pioneer of on-chain AI Inference Focused on Building High-Performance Ethereum L2

Metis Hyperion: Bringing New Opportunities for AI Narratives on Ethereum

1. Overview of Metis Hyperion

Metis is an important part of the Ethereum L2 ecosystem, based on Optimistic Rollup technology. It initially launched the Andromeda mainnet, which is characterized by a decentralized sequencer that hands the transaction ordering rights to community participants. In March 2025, Metis announced a dual-chain strategy: building on the existing general-purpose chain Andromeda, it will launch a high-performance Hyperion chain. Andromeda is positioned as a secure and reliable general-purpose L2, while Hyperion focuses on high-frequency, high-throughput, and AI-driven application scenarios.

The Hyperion architecture is built on top of the Metis SDK, with its core being the brand new MetisVM virtual machine. MetisVM is not only compatible with EVM but also supports AI-optimized instructions, aiming to enhance scalability and decentralization while significantly improving transaction efficiency. Hyperion is dedicated to creating a "high-performance, AI-native" L2 network that can achieve near-millisecond transaction confirmation and ultra-high transaction throughput, thereby creating conditions for on-chain LLM inference and decentralized AI agents and other applications.

The development roadmap of Metis is mainly reflected in two aspects: first, continuously improving the core L2 infrastructure, such as the integration of real-time data availability migration and fraud proof mechanisms in the Andromeda upgrade in May 2025; second, advancing modularization and multi-chain interoperability, lowering development barriers through the Metis SDK, and promoting the development of a multi-chain ecosystem. The launch of Hyperion has, to some extent, reshaped the value logic of the METIS token, transforming Metis from a single L2 into a "multi-chain infrastructure + AI dedicated chain" platform.

2. The Logic of Metis Implementing On-Chain LLM

2.1 AI ecological closed loop three-piece set: SDK, Hyperion, LazAI

As an Optimistic Rollup, Hyperion inherits the security model of the Metis and Optimism systems, primarily optimizing in areas such as parallel computation, data availability, and decentralization, specifically targeting AI and high-frequency application scenarios. Metis promotes ecological construction through the three major systems of Metis SDK, Hyperion, and LazAI.

Hyperion introduces a parallel execution engine that utilizes optimistic concurrency control and a dynamic DAG scheduling algorithm, allowing independent transactions within the same block to run simultaneously, significantly enhancing throughput. It also employs a decentralized sorter, with transaction ordering rights shared among a multi-node network, preventing front-running and centralized interference through mechanisms such as leader rotation and encrypted memory pools.

In terms of data availability, Hyperion plans to leverage the new features of Ethereum and external DA services. With the advancement of EIP-4844, Hyperion will directly publish transaction data to L1 via blob transactions. Metis is also preparing to integrate EigenDA.

Hyperion adopts an upgraded fraud proof mechanism and introduces an interactive error correction mechanism. After the sorter publishes a new block, the "observers" in the network have a certain time window to submit challenges to prove the block is invalid.

In terms of AI native infrastructure, the Metis SDK allows users to independently build L2 or L3 blockchains, integrating an upgraded EVM (MetisVM) and parallel processing capabilities, along with a decentralized sorting mechanism. Hyperion is a high-performance AI-specific Layer2 built on this SDK. MetisVM significantly enhances transaction efficiency through dynamically optimized opcodes and parallel execution mechanisms. MetisDB achieves nanosecond-level state access using memory-mapped Merkle trees and concurrency control.

In terms of incubating AI narrative projects, Metis is actively promoting the development of the LazAI protocol. This is an open network focused on "trusted AI data assets," aimed at addressing the issues of data opacity and inconsistency in AI usage. Based on the LazAI protocol, Metis has also launched the Alith framework, which is a development tool for AI agents customized for blockchain.

2.2 The Differentiated Competitive Advantage of Hyperion

Hyperion has built differentiated competitive advantages through forward-looking technology and strategic layout while maintaining the foundation of Optimistic Rollup. Its main features include:

  1. High-performance execution layer: Hyperion achieves near real-time settlement and Web2-level response speed through Optimistic Rollup, parallel execution, and distributed sorting technology. MetisVM is tailored for high-frequency trading and AI tasks, featuring dynamic opcode optimization, parallel execution, and caching mechanisms.

  2. Dual-Chain Strategy: Retain Andromeda as a general-purpose L2 while introducing Hyperion specifically for AI scenarios, addressing the trade-off between generality and specialization.

  3. Metis SDK: A modular toolkit for developers that integrates blueprints, building tools, and standard interfaces, making it easy to quickly build custom execution layers or applications.

  4. Decentralized Sorter: The transaction sorting rights are controlled by community nodes and a staking mechanism, achieving fault tolerance and censorship resistance through rotating consensus nodes and incentive token governance.

3. Metis's Strategy in Response to Ethereum's Focus on L1

3.1 The Autonomous Development Path of Metis

Assuming Ethereum focuses on L1 development, Metis has adopted a strategy of modularization and multi-chain.

The dual-chain architecture of Metis and MetisSDK provides the capability to build multiple dedicated chains. With MetisSDK, any team can quickly create customized blockchains, configure parallel execution consensus, EVM compatible layers, AI optimized VMs, on-chain storage, and other components, supporting more "industry-specific chains."

Metis emphasizes cross-chain interoperability and a collaborative ecosystem, planning to introduce cross-chain bridging and data/computation aggregation mechanisms. Metis will integrate Chainlink CCIP to enable the free flow of assets and smart contracts between Metis and other public chains.

Community participation is a crucial part of the Metis strategy. By opening up the role of the sequencer, anyone can become a block proposer by staking and earn sequencing rewards. Metis also plans to introduce an AI node operation incentive mechanism to encourage more developers to deploy inference services, providing on-chain AI capabilities.

3.2 Metis All in AI Strategy

Hyperion has partnered with LazAI to introduce the Alith AI agent framework, allowing developers to write "AI agents" using the Alith SDK and deploy them on Hyperion. These agents can handle functions such as model selection, inference logic, and fault response, and can be directly called by other contracts on the chain.

Hyperion incorporates AI inference into the on-chain execution process through mechanisms such as pre-compiled contracts, with inference results fixed on the chain via logs, reproducible operations, or trusted execution environments, achieving verifiable trustworthiness. This design retains the transparency of blockchain while meeting the computational needs of AI.

Hyperion's parallel processing and low latency characteristics are particularly suitable for AI tasks. As long as there are no conflicts between requests, they can be executed simultaneously, making it more efficient than traditional L2 sequential execution. MetisVM has also been optimized for AI, supporting various inputs such as text and images, allowing AI models to run directly on the chain.

4. ETH Hyperion vs. Solana AI

4.1 AI Competitive Landscape

Solana has achieved significant success in the Crypto+AI market, driving the development of open protocols such as Model Context Protocol (MCP). However, AI solutions on Solana mainly run AI models off-chain, calling results on-chain.

What makes Hyperion unique is its attempt to allow AI reasoning to be executed on-chain. If Hyperion successfully implements the first Layer-2 protocol that supports local execution of LLM on-chain, it will mean that AI models can run directly in MetisVM, with each computational step completed within the blockchain's execution environment. This design decentralizes AI more thoroughly than Solana's solution, and the AI reasoning results on Hyperion can be verified and traced on-chain.

Solana has a natural advantage in high concurrency processing capability and mature GPU chip support architecture. Hyperion focuses on compatibility and ecological interaction with the Ethereum ecosystem, including EVM compatibility, MetisSDK ecosystem, and METIS token liquidity.

Overall, Hyperion and Solana do not have a direct substitution relationship, but rather provide an alternative approach to the blockchain + AI integration: Solana relies on its network performance and traditional LLM interface (MCP), while Metis leverages its smart contract platform to launch native on-chain reasoning capabilities.

4.2 The Potential and Limitations of Hyperion

Hyperion, although it has brought new possibilities for Web3 AI and provided the Ethereum camp with chips to participate in the AI narrative, it is not the current universal key. Most "AI+chain" projects are still at the conceptual level, and there are very few cases that can be verified as productivity applications. Issues of model ownership and trust have not yet been fully resolved.

Hyperion's system design addresses these pain points to some extent by providing support for AI reasoning at the protocol layer, which solves some computing power issues. The parallel execution and optimization of MetisVM greatly enhance on-chain computing capabilities beyond traditional L2, but this does not mean that Hyperion solves all problems at once.

Hyperion has made progress primarily in computing architecture and trust foundations, including a significant amount of parallelizable computing power, on-chain verifiable execution processes, a modular toolchain, and native support for the specific needs of AI. These efforts create possibilities for the future emergence of truly practical blockchain + AI applications, adding substantive content to the AI narrative in the crypto space.
